In November I travelled with a family through two very different corners of the Maasai Mara, exploring the Reserve and the northern conservancies during one of the quietest times of the year. Without the crowds of peak season, the Mara revealed a deeper, more honest version of itself. Extraordinary sightings, long discussions around the fire and an unfiltered look at the ecosystem turned this “off-season” journey into one of the most meaningful safaris I’ve done in years.

The chaos at Mara River crossings doesn’t have to be inevitable. I have proposed a system that would regulate access without charging visitors extra, using a first-come, first-served approach. Vehicles would be parked in predetermined spots, with each crossing point carefully assessed for its capacity. This would ensure that every car has a fair view, removing the frantic, rally-style races we see today.
