As January unfolds, I’m thrilled to share the latest updates and highlights from my time here in India. This month, the spotlight is on the incredible work we're doing with SUJÁN Jawai and our ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation and guiding excellence.

TWELVE YEARS OF UNCOVERING THE SECRETS OF JAWAI
In this remarkable corner of Rajasthan, a leopard silently marks its territory within a cave—an ancient ritual, unseen and unknown to many just 12 years ago. When we first started our work here, Jawai was a blank canvas in the world of leopard behaviour. The hills whispered secrets that we could only guess at.
Over a decade of dedication, observation, and respect, we have come to understand these elusive rock leopards like never before. Slowly, with patience and care, the leopards have grown accustomed to our presence. The once-unimaginable now feels like a privilege: to see them, photograph them, and share their stories.

Today, Jawai has become a destination for wildlife enthusiasts from around the globe. We are proud to have played a role in putting this extraordinary place on the map. But this comes with immense responsibility. At SUJÁN Jawai, we remain committed to the highest standards of field ethics and conservation practices.
The leopards of Jawai are not just icons of wilderness; they are symbols of what can be achieved when respect guides our actions. I am deeply proud of the work our field team does every day to ensure that these magnificent animals and their fragile ecosystem are protected for generations to come.

SUCCESSFUL REWILDING IN JAWAI
One of the most exciting developments in Jawai has been the rewilding project. We’ve transformed farmland back into thriving forest ecosystems by replacing mono-crops of mustard, wheat, castor, and chickpeas with thousands of kilograms of grass seeds and hundreds of tree saplings.
Watching this transformation has been incredible. The wildlife has responded beautifully—the prey base is diversifying and multiplying, and leopards are now moving into the area and feeling more at ease. This has resulted in some truly spectacular leopard encounters, showcasing the positive impact of our conservation efforts.

A JOURNEY OF GROWTH AND GIVING BACK
Having been involved with the Jawai project for the past 12 years, I've had the privilege of witnessing its beauty and challenges firsthand. I lived in India for nearly five years at the beginning of the project and have regularly returned to consult and contribute.
This experience has been transformative, and I'm passionate about contributing to the region's conservation efforts and fostering sustainable tourism.

CULTIVATING FUTURE LEADERS
Training the next generation of guides has been incredibly rewarding. Drawing from my years of experience, I mentor and shape future guides, helping them learn from my successes and mistakes. My goal is to offer them a window into my journey, guiding them to become exceptional ambassadors for Jawai and ethical stewards of its wildlife.
What values define a great guide? How can you go beyond delivering information to create truly transformative experiences for your guests? These are the questions I challenge my students to think about every day.

EMBRACING RESPONSIBILITY
We have a deep responsibility to protect Jawai’s ancient hills, leopards, and the way of life for the Rabari people. By focusing on ethical guiding practices and conservation, we strive to preserve this unique landscape’s delicate balance.

SPOTLIGHT ON INDIA'S DIVERSE WILDLIFE
India's rich biodiversity is endlessly inspiring. From Jawai’s leopards to vibrant birdlife, each encounter offers a unique glimpse into the country’s natural wonders.
Through my photography and stories, I aim to bring these moments to life for others, sharing the beauty and importance of this extraordinary region.

FAMILY CORNER
Leo continues to charm everyone he meets, thriving in the wilderness with his shoes off. Kipling, now 8 months old, is crawling everywhere and already looks up to his big brother for inspiration.
